#Enduring Hope:
Growing in Faith Over Time

There’s a special kind of hope that doesn’t arrive in an instant but grows deep within us—a hope that nurtures and endures through every challenge we face. Today, we’re diving into the concept of hope that grows over time, much like the resilient bamboo in our backyards. Imagine bamboo plants that, despite their rapid growth, require an unyielding foundation to truly flourish. In our often instant-gratification world—where even grits come in a minute—we are reminded that God’s promise of hope starts with salvation and blossoms through a lifetime of spiritual growth.

Bamboo:

I have bamboo in my backyard, a remnant of a previous owner who clearly admired its beauty and strength. In the Lowcountry, these bamboo plants thrive; they grow fast, are tough to cut down, and seem to persist with an almost stubborn resilience. But let me share a fascinating twist: there’s a type of bamboo found in China, known for its remarkable thickness and strength. Unlike the typical backyard variety that fills out in just a year, this bamboo tree takes five, sometimes even six years to grow before it shoots up over 90 feet into the air. During this time, its roots grow deep and strong, preparing it for a towering future. This process mirrors a type of hope—one that, like the Chinese bamboo, builds strength and depth over time, unseen in the early stages yet destined to support towering heights later.

In Scripture, we see this idea beautifully illustrated. In 1 Thessalonians, Paul prays, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”   Similarly, in Philippians 1:6, Paul assures us that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  These verses remind us that just as the Chinese bamboo tree starts slowly before ascending to incredible heights, our journey of faith and hope is a process—one that transforms us from the inside out, even when we face seasons of seeming stagnation.

Think about the characters in our lives who sometimes seem like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh—those moments when all you want to do is sit back and go through the motions, where hope feels distant and the day-to-day grind dulls our spirits. We’ve all had those moments where everything feels the same and nothing new seems on the horizon. But then, there are the shining examples—the people whose eyes light up with hope despite having endured overwhelming challenges. Like BJ, a speaker at our youth program, who shared his powerful story. Once living out of his car and facing hardship head-on, BJ transformed his life through hope and determination to become not only a baseball star but also a baseball coach. His journey stands as a living testament to the idea that hope isn’t an overnight miracle—it’s a process of ongoing transformation, a continuous nurturing of the spirit through every twist and turn in our lives.

Scriptures further encourage us:

Romans 15:13:  “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Hebrews 10:23-25: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…”

These verses remind us that our hope must grow and mature just like that resilient bamboo. It takes time, patience, and a commitment to worship, fellowship, and obedience to God’s word. The process is gradual, cultivating deep roots in the rich soil of faith, so that when the time comes—the day of Christ’s return—we stand strong and unyielding.

As we reflect on this message, let us embrace the journey of hope. Whether you’re familiar with the rapid vibrancy of a backyard bamboo or the slow, awe-inspiring rise of Chinese bamboo, remember that God is working in you. He is cultivating a hope that, while it may not be instantly visible, is deep-rooted and destined to reach heavenly heights.

May we each find inspiration in our journey of faith—encouraging one another, sharing our struggles, and celebrating our victories. And as we continue on, let us always be on the lookout for opportunities to witness, nurture, and spread that enduring hope among our families, our friends, and our entire church community.

Let your hope grow, not overnight, but with each day of spirited faith and continuous growth—rooted in the promise of salvation and blossoming in the power of the Holy Spirit.

In love and hope,
Pastor Daniel Burbage
